The Scriptures
..................Basic Understanding of Scriptures

For many Christians Knowing and Understanding the Word of God is so important because:

2 Timothy 3:16 / (All) Scripture is given by inspiration of God [Men wrote what God wanted said], and is profitable [Helpful/Useful (to/for) us], for doctrine [What we believe to be true], for reproof [Conviction of what is right], for correction [Setting things right in your Life], for instruction in righteousness [Discipline in thinking and acting the way God wants us to]

The Scriptures of the Bible, make them plain and simple for my understanding:

What do they mean to for Me?

Luke 14:26
(NKJV)
If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.

The "hatred" in this verse is actually a lesser love. Jesus wants us to be so devoted to Him, that our attachment to everything else (family, money, material possessions, and even our own lives) would seem like hatred by comparison to Him. Our first love and obedience must be to God.

Galatians 5:16
(NKJV)
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

The lust of the flesh is making decisions based on what I want, think, and feel. This is what brings trouble and strife in our lives. When we walk in the Spirit, we have no lust of the flesh. When we make Jesus Lord of our life, He makes our decisions for us.

Philippians 2:12 (NKJV)
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

Salvation is by grace alone, but is not always easy. It calls for knowledge of the truth of God's Word, repentance, submission to Christ as Lord, and a willingness to obey His will and His Word.

1 Thessalonians 5:22
(KJV)
Abstain from all appearance of evil.

We know that it is bad to do evil, but it is also bad to even give the appearance of evil. The world is looking how we conduct our lives. If we give the appearance of evil, we can cause someone to sin.

Psalms 19:11 (ERV)
His teachings warn his servants,  and good things come to those who obey them.

The Lord's teachings shows us what to do in all conditions of life, and warns us of the consequences of not complying with them.

Romans 8:6 (NKJV)
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Carnally means "the flesh". The person with the mind set on the flesh is spiritually dead. The person with the mind set on the Spirit is spiritually alive and at peace with God.

James 1:15
(NKJV)
Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Lust: Strong desire of the human soul to acquire something to fulfill the flesh. Until you hate sin the way God does, you will continue sinning.

Proverbs 4:23
(ERV)
Above all, be careful what you think because your thoughts control your life.

What you expose yourself to the most will determine how you think. How you think will determine how you feel. How you feel will determine the decisions you make. Your decisions will determine the actions you take.

Romans 8:9
(NKJV)
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

How do I know if I have the Spirit? / Has the Spirit led you to Jesus? / Has the Spirit put in you the desire to honor Jesus? / Is the Spirit leading you to be more like Jesus?

2 Peter 3:9
(NKJV)
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance

The Lord delays His coming because He is patient and desires the time for His people to repent. The path to hell is the path of a non-repentant heart.
